Hello 2012, Goodbye Universal Sports

Going cable free is hardest on a sports fan...  no ESPN, no Comcast Sports Net, and no Pay-Per-View sporting events.  In the Philadelphia area, there was only one broadcast channel fully committed to sports; Universal Sports. Unfortunately for me and other cable cutters, we woke up to this news this morning:

Over the past year, I've enjoyed Universal Sports.  The programming reminded me of the old ABC show, Wide World of Sports.   Every time I turned to the channel, I was surprised by the variety of sport.  They broadcast less popular sports like marathons, triathlons, figure skating, skiing, gymnastics, track, the Rugby World Cup, women's beach volleyball (my personal favorite), and everything in between.  Recently I heard on the radio that cable subscribers were going to be losing access on 1/1/2012.  They prompted viewers to contact their cable companies to request that they keep it.  I assumed that Universal Sports was raising the rates on the cable companies, but had no idea that it would affect the OTA (free) broadcast.  Obviously I was wrong!  Goodbye Universal Sports... it was great while we had ya!!!
